A good solid and easily readable book about Ike and his rise to the top of the greasy pole. I especially like the authors coverage of his presidency during what is turning out to be the high point of America as the major world power. All I can say is that we were blessed as a nation to have him. As it turned out to be that he was the right man, at the right time, for the right jobs. All I know is that. We sure could use a man like him right now is all I can say. Hopefully another like him will turn up & soon! This is the most well regarded Ike biography. The author is known to be among the best biographers ever. I can see why. Ike is presented fairly I think. He is shown to have many wonderful skills and several things about his life are not what we would accept in a president today. He has a mistress and though the book is not prurient, it also does not sugar coat the man. Under today;s military rules for officers he would be discharged from duty.I have taken to history books to minimize today's current events. As I have gotten older history has finally fit in its place. This is a very good read. Though there are footnotes they do not distract. From reading other biographies that overlap I know that this author has been fair and thorough. That is all one could want I think.
